PASCO COUNTY, Fla. — Neighbors in a Port Richey community say speeding is getting out of control there.

Their concern is on Bougenville Drive, just east of U.S. 19.

It’s a two-lane straightaway in front of homes that neighbors say is dangerous.

“It’s supposed to be 30 miles per hour,” said Bougenville resident Lydia Maldonado. “And they definitely don’t go 30 mph. They go at least 50.”

Around Bougenville Drive, drivers will see signs that neighbors put up themselves, asking them to slow down and watch out for kids and pets.

Neighbor Robyn Howell tried asking Pasco County for help.

She says she was told five years ago that she and other neighbors would have to pay thousands of dollars for speed bumps.

“I don’t think it’s right for the residents to have to pay for that,” Howell said.

So they’ve been looking for other solutions, even something like more speed limit signs.

“There’s only one speed limit sign on this road, that’s the entrance to U.S. 19,” said resident Eddie Stevens. “The entrance on the other end doesn’t have one. There are no other speed limit signs on this road.”

Maldonado says pets have been hit on Bougenville Drive. She worries it could get worse, too.

“Next thing you know, they’re going to be hitting a child that’s playing out here,” Howell said.

Spectrum News reached out to Pasco County to see if there’s ever been any traffic calming measures considered there, but hasn’t received a response yet.

Pasco County does have a new traffic request form that residents can use for issues like this one.
